If you have ever done any spiritual / energetic work then you are probably familiar with the widely used term ‘grounding’. But what exactly is grounding?
I have recently come to realise that many people have vastly different ideas of what grounding is, which I find fascinating since we all use the term assuming we understand each other.
Having studied Reiki and also working Psychically and as a Medium, I know that grounding is extremely important for a number of reasons, so I will share these reasons and my personal thoughts and feelings on grounding.
Why do we need to be Grounded?
Both people that partake in psychic/energetic work, and those that don’t, need to be grounded in my opinion. Have you ever met someone who’s ‘head is in the clouds’ or could be described as ‘flighty’ or change their mind/career/partners frequently? These people are rarely grounded, so nothing they do sticks with them for very long.
A psychic that isn’t grounded will often seem ‘off with the fairies’, or ‘out of touch with reality’. For example I know of a few psychics who talk about ‘love and light’, but forget about the day to day practicality that we all have to deal with in life. Readings from these kinds of people can be tough as it’s hard to take their information and apply it in daily life.
When you are grounded, you are in touch with reality, and yet can still hold your spiritual connection. Grounding is beneficial in all areas of life, as it keeps you focussed and in the now.
How do I Ground Myself?
There are many ways to ground yourself. As the name implies, connecting to the earth is one powerful way. Either walking or standing barefoot on the earth will ground you instantly, yet this is not always possible or practical. Connecting with the earth or nature, either physically or with your intention is all that it takes to ground yourself.
You can imagine yourself as a tree and see your roots reaching down into the ground, allowing your energy to blend with that of mother earth. Some may instead imagine a cord from the base of your spine reaching down into the earth, and connecting that way.
If you are familiar with sacred geometry, the cube (or hexahedron) is the shape of the base chakra and also represents the element of earth and is powerful for grounding.
Water is also very good for grounding. Swimming in the ocean will not only wash away any negativity but also the salt in the water helps ground as a symbol of the earth.
What if I want to do Spiritual Work?
When doing any kind of spiritual or energetic work of course you will want to connect with higher energies, but remember that your physical body always remains here on the earthly plane. Grounding while at the same time raising your vibration, helps you bring those energies into this plane, to work with here in the physical world.
In fact if you are not grounded when doing spiritual work, you may find that you feel as though you ‘float off’ somewhere else and lose track, which is a wonderful feeling, but not overly practical if you are needed here at the same time.
Releasing Negativity
Another benefit of grounding is releasing negative energy, or a build up of too much energy into the earth. You may be thinking, isn’t that bad to send negative energy into mother earth. However there is no need to worry as the earth is well equipped to transmute negative energies into positive ones, or to send negative energies to wherever they are needed. If you think of fear or aggression as negative energy, then you can surely see that they are in fact quite powerful and useful in some situations, thus negative energy is only negative when it is in the wrong place and time, not where it is needed.
Daily Grounding
Hopefully I have answered some of your questions about grounding, and you see how it can benefit you. I make it a daily practice that everyday when i leave the house, I ground myself by touching nature, and visualising my energetic cord extending down into mother earth, all the way to her heart where the energy flows freely along the cord from the earth to myself and up into the universe. I find it a great way to start the day and always helps me to feel more balanced and positive.
